Cindy Rogers Lopopolo Wild Horse Preserve
2,000 Acre Horse Preserve / Medical Retreat
Location: Cindy Rogers Lopopolo Wild Horse Preserve, Escondido, New Mexico
8 ½ miles east of I-25, at the Escondido exit, on the Quebradas senic byway.
5,000 acres with rest areas, primitive campsites, and hiking trails.
The Preserve is located approximately 5 miles to the east of Escondido, New Mexico on the Quebradas Scenic Byway. It consists of 640 deeded acres owned and 1280 acres, optioned by Mr. LoPopolo which are leased to the New Mexican Horse Project for the purpose of preservation of the New Mexican breed. It is private land purchased for the sole purpose of allowing wild horses and individuals suffering from cancer to come together.
In addition, this preserve is being established in memory of those of the New Mexican Horse Project who fell victim to cancer. The preserve is a place where those brave individuals who are combating this wretched disease will be able to relax and enjoy some of nature's wonders. The cancer patients have free run of the preserve including the use of all the facilities, except certain restricted areas that are limited to authorized members only.
The preserve will contain 120 campsites when fully completed, with common areas, a sheltered fire hearth and portable restroom facilities. Each sites area will accommodate groups of eight per unit. Each campsite will be one/half acre in size less the common area. No campsite will be fenced so as to restrain any of the wildlife on the preserve from free passage from one area to another on the preserve and no campsite will be construct as to hinder the movement of the horses on the preserve. The campsites will be leased for a 10 year period at a time, but only to members and sponsors of the New Mexican Horse Project.
Those who lease have a full understanding that the campsites, each and every one, will be open 50% of the time, at no charge for the usage, to individuals suffering from cancer.
During the summer months some of the campsites will be used to establish a Children's Summer Cancer Camp, again at no charge to the children, their caretakers or immediate family.
Another feature of the preserve is the restoration of the ranch house approximately 3/4 of a mile off the main road but on one of the 20 miles of hiking trails.
There will also be between 12 and 18 scenic viewing areas throughout the park.
